Aperture is the adjustable iris in your lens, made from thin metal blades that move together to form a circular opening, which varies in size. This opening controls how much light enters the camera.
Music and photography are my two passions in life and I always jump at the chance to ‘shoot music’. Recently, a friend and fellow photographer, Ravi Panchia invited me along to a performance of a band I have not yet heard of, The Sick Leaves. The performance was for a live broadcast of MK’s Studio 1 on DSTV channel 324. [...]
My core business is studio photography, be it capturing images of glamorous celebrities or toilet rolls for commercial use, and one tends to get into a comfort zone with your available equipment and studio facilities. Recently however I’ve had the opportunity to shoot a lot of location work which involved traveling unencumbered and making do with available light in a [...]
Definition: Shutter speed is the amount of time the camera shutter is open, allowing the sensor (or film) to be exposed to light. Therefore, the longer the shutter is open for, the more light will be let in. Shutter speed is measured in seconds (and in most cases, fractions of seconds). We received a few impressive entries but in the end Tim Molepo’s entry came out tops in our office poll. Congratulations Tim and enjoy the memory card and PiX subscription. Taken on a Canon 50D with 18-55 IS lens. Not exactly the look I was looking for. Wish I could get both sides reflecting but was short on hands and [...]
On Sunday the 18th of July, PiX and the Academy of Creative Photography will be shooting the cover for the August/September edition. This cover-shoot workshop will give you more insight into how we construct our cover shots and how we set up the lighting, among other things. This is also a great opportunity to meet and network with fellow PiX [...]
Polar Panoramas, also known as Pano Planets and Polar Planets, probably won’t be the next best selling photographic service to make you millions, but it is one of the most rewarding ways you can display your landscape photographs. While the results are rather eye-catching, these images are in reality very easy to make, requiring only basic Photoshop skills. Best of [...]
